Working together to #supporttheirjourney

rebeccachidley

Back at the end of 2022 and start of 2023 we ran a series of parent group sessions at VGA to explore perspectives on the athlete, coach, parent relationships and the various roles within these relationships. Below we will share some of the outcomes.

Please note…

At the forefront of our work is a child centred approach. How can we best support the child at the centre of each of these relationships to thrive on their journey in sport and beyond. With this in mind we focus on the following areas:

  • Each person is unique.

  • Each person’s experience in sport will be unique.

  • Each person will experience unique peaks and troughs on their journey.

And break them down in to these themes:

  • Explore and find coping strategies that work for me and review them throughout my journey.

  • Learn from and encourage each other (reduce my comparisons).

  • Focus on the elements of wellbeing, development and performance that are within my control.

  • Identify and work towards my goals whilst supporting others in the pursuit of theirs.

We have kickstarted this process with a focus on the athlete, parent, coach triad with one question posed to parents during the sessions…

What is the role of each of the individuals in this relationship?

In the right hand image below you will also find a reference to some responses shared in a previously published piece of research in this area (this was not completed by Life-in-Sport or VGA)

The responses from our parent groups...

Below are the responses from parents that we will utilise to inform our support in the coming months.
